Our faith calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and that love extends to those who have journeyed to our community seeking a better life. On March 2 at 4 pm, our church will host a vital conversation with the Annapolis Immigration Justice Network (AIJN) to learn more about their work supporting immigrant families in our area and how we can live out our faith by advocating for just and humane immigration policies.
As United Methodists, we believe that "God’s love knows no human boundary," and we are committed to welcoming the stranger as we would welcome Christ himself. Our Social Principles affirm the right of all persons to equal opportunities and call us to advocate for justice for immigrants. We recognize the gifts and contributions of immigrants to our society and stand against policies that separate families or detain children.
AIJN is a local non-profit organization that connects immigrants with attorneys who can assist them with their citizenship cases. Their work is crucial in helping individuals and families navigate the complex immigration system and build a stable future in our community. Jessa Coulter, Executive Director of AIJN, will be joining us to share insights into their work, the challenges faced by immigrant families in our area, and how we can be a part of the solution.
This conversation is an opportunity for us to:
Learn: Gain a deeper understanding of the realities of immigration in our community and the vital role AIJN plays in supporting immigrant families.
Connect: Hear firsthand accounts of the impact of AIJN's work and connect with the human stories behind the immigration "issue."
Act: Discover concrete ways our church can partner with AIJN to advocate for just and humane immigration policies and provide practical support to immigrant families.
The Bible is replete with calls to love the sojourner. From Leviticus's command to treat the stranger as one of our own citizens to Jesus's own experience as a refugee, we are called to extend compassion and hospitality to those who have come to our community seeking safety and opportunity. This conversation with AIJN is a chance to answer that call.
We encourage all members of our congregation and the wider community to attend this important event. Let us come together to learn, to listen, and to discern how we can be a beacon of welcome and justice for our immigrant neighbors.
