The Social Principles: Embracing Wholeness

Week 4: Celebrating God's Wholeness: Embracing LGBTQ+ Inclusion

The United Methodist Church (UMC) is celebrating a new chapter in its journey of inclusion! This week, we explore the Social Justice Principle affirming the sacredness of all human life and the importance of loving relationships, including joyful marriages for LGBTQ+ persons. We'll delve into scripture's message of love and celebrate the recent decisions that allow LGBTQ+ clergy to be ordained and same-sex marriages to be officiated within the UMC.

A Foundation of Unconditional Love:

The core message of the Bible is one of boundless love. Romans 12:9-10 beautifully captures this essence: "Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection – outdo one another in showing honor."  This verse emphasizes the importance of genuine love, extending it freely without judgment or prejudice. Similarly, Galatians 5:22 describes the fruit of the Spirit: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control." Love stands at the forefront of these qualities, urging us to embrace all people with open hearts and unwavering compassion.

The UMC Embraces Wholeness:

The UMC is moving forward with a spirit of inclusion, reflecting the love of Christ for all God's children. In a historic decision, the church recently lifted restrictions on the ordination of LGBTQ+ clergy and opened the door for same-sex marriage ceremonies. This momentous step celebrates the diversity within the UMC and paves the way for a more inclusive and affirming church community.

Building a Welcoming Church:

With this exciting transformation underway, here are some ways we can continue building a welcoming and affirming church:

  • Joyful Celebration: Celebrate the love and commitment of LGBTQ+ couples by participating in weddings and offering joyful support.

  • Active Engagement: Welcome LGBTQ+ individuals into leadership roles within the church, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.

  • Lifelong Learning: Continue to educate ourselves on LGBTQ+ issues and advocate for inclusivity within our communities and beyond.

  • Celebrating Diversity: Recognize the richness and diversity that LGBTQ+ individuals bring to the church, creating a vibrant tapestry of faith experiences.

Discussion Prompts:

  • How can we continue to create a church community that actively celebrates LGBTQ+ relationships and identities?

  • What are some ways we can ensure all LGBTQ+ individuals feel welcome to participate fully in the life of the church?

  • How can we demonstrate the radical love and acceptance of Christ towards all people?

Moving Forward in Joyful Fellowship:

The UMC's journey towards full inclusion is a testament to the power of love and compassion. By embracing the diversity within our community and celebrating the sacredness of all human life, we can create a vibrant and inclusive church that reflects the love of God in its fullness.
