Eastport United Methodist Church is proud to partner with Centro De Ayuda to offer weekly English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. This vital program provides crucial support to immigrants in our community, helping them overcome language barriers and become more active and integrated members of society.
The English classes resumed on January 14, with classes held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 - 11:00 am. The class has seen a significant increase in enrollment, with 15 students, including both new and returning participants from diverse backgrounds: El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ukraine, and Pakistan.
This diverse representation underscores the significant need for these classes within our community. By providing a welcoming and supportive environment, Eastport United Methodist Church and Centro De Ayuda are empowering individuals to improve their communication skills, which opens doors to employment opportunities, improved healthcare access, and enhanced social interaction. The ability to communicate effectively also increases their independence, allowing them to navigate daily life more easily, from grocery shopping to attending medical appointments. Furthermore, learning English fosters a sense of belonging and connection within the community, enabling individuals to participate more fully in civic and social activities.
"Your kindness and willingness to open your doors have made it possible for us to help immigrants take meaningful steps toward becoming active members of the community," shared Fran Phillips, the instructor at Centro De Ayuda. "Without your help, this important work would not be possible."
Eastport United Methodist Church is deeply grateful for the opportunity to partner with Centro De Ayuda and to make a lasting difference in the lives of so many immigrants in our community.
